Established in Hartford in 1825, The Connecticut Historical Society (CHS) is a  museum,  library and education center that collects, preserves, and interprets the history of the diverse people -past and present-who have made our state their home.

Our museum exhibitions provide a fascinating experience for children and adults. The galleries feature state of the art sound and light effects, recreated settings, and historical artifacts from our collections that take visitors back in time to understand the past.

  • Amistad-A True Story of Freedom tells of the struggle for freedom by a group of Africans following their 1839 revolt on the ship Amistad and the Connecticut people who helped them in New London, New Haven, Hartford and Farmington.
  • Tours and Detours Through Early Connecticut explores how Native Americans, colonists, and African Americans lived, worked and shaped the state we know today, from Adriaen Block's landing through the American Revolution.
  • The Hands-on History Gallery is an interactive space designed especially for kids where they can build a stone wall, play with life size paper dolls, and smell roses, maple syrup and other Connecticut scents.

The museum also preserves and provides access to objects which document the people and events of our state, including the largest collections of Connecticut furniture, portraits, photographs and works of art on paper, costumes and textiles. One of four major research centers in the state, the library has three million manuscripts and nearly 100,000 volumes, including one of the largest genealogy collections in New England.

The CHS is located in Hartford's historic west end near Elizabeth Park and is easily accessible from interstate 84.
